White breasted Tapaculo by ANDY FOSTER

The 11 cm White-breasted Tapaculo is endemic to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest and southern Brazil and found up to 1,500 m in altitude, inhabiting dense and dark areas of primary and secondary humid forests bordered by araucaria trees, ciliary and subtropical woods, hiding on or close to the ground. Its call may resemble those of some amphibians, and it often sings from the inside of tree cavities. It lives in the undergrowth of open forests, forest edges and dense secondary forest, building spheric nests on natural cavities or in fallen trunks employing roots, small branches, and lichen. They usually lay two white eggs a year. The White-breasted Tapaculo feeds on insects captured on or near the ground. Assessed as least concern by the IUCN, its main threat is fragmentation of its habitat.
