Bauhinia angulosa Vogel is an endemic Brazilian vine that can be found in both primary and secondary forests, particularly in the Atlantic Rainforest. Some specimens of this slow-growing plant are estimated to have a lifespan of up to two hundred years. As a climbing shrub, it has a long stem and woody tendrils that curl up and rest on trees, creating a unique undulating staircase appearance. This is why it is commonly referred to as the “monkey ladder” in Brazil. The plant typically blooms from August to September and produces fruit from December to January. In addition to serving as a bridge for animals to move between trees, its bark has been used in traditional medicine and has also been the subject of scientific studies, which have yielded promising results.
