Manacá da Serra (Tibouchina mutabilis) is a pioneer tree of the Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest, growing mostly in the Serra do Mar region. It occurs almost exclusively on secondary forests. It likes humidity and is an evergreen plant. It owes its name mutabilis due to the fact that its flowers change colors as they age. They first bloom white, then turn into light violet and finally they become dark violet. In full blossom, the tree exhibits flowers in all three colors! It is widely used in city landscaping for its non-aggressive roots and for its medium height, providing shade while not reaching the powerlines.
