🦗While crickets are omnivorous and crepuscular insects, grasshoppers are herbivorous and diurnal. Their main difference is that crickets tend to have long antennae and make their sounds by rubbing their wings, while grasshoppers have shorter antennae and rub their hindlegs against their wings. They inhabit fields, forests, and rocks nearly all over the world and evolved about 300 million years ago. Crickets graze on flowers, fruits, and leaves, as well as on seeds, stems, and roots. Grasshoppers eat insect eggs, larvae, pupae, as well as aphids, molting and scale insects. Some of them are scavengers and consume decaying plants and fungi, making them important decomposers of plant and animal matter reducing significant amounts of greenhouse emissions. Proportionately, these insects are an important source of food for birds, turtles, toads, foxes, lizards, spiders, and many other animals in the food chain. Their main defense mechanisms are camouflage, fleeing and aggression.

All photos were taken at Eco Lodge Itororó, where these fascinating creatures thrive in a well-preserved and regenerated Atlantic Rainforest. This biodiversity hotspot offers a rare opportunity to observe insects in their natural habitat, supporting a delicate ecological balance that benefits countless species.
