Antbird by Andy Foster

In Brazil Bertoni’s Antbirds are endemic to the Southeastern Atlantic Rainforest and usually inhabit underwood and mid-wood bamboo stands in evergreen forests. They tend to prefer mountainous regions but can be seen at sea level also. A medium sized bird, measuring 12cm, they are year-round residents in their range and may move locally when bamboo stands die. These birds primarily feed on spiders, ants, caterpillars, locusts, leafhoppers, and other arthropods. They typically forage at a height of between 1m – 15m and will also probe and tear at clusters of dead leaves. Bertoni’s antbirds breeding season is from November to January. Considered as a common species across their range, Bertoni´s Antbirds inhabit large, protected areas. Morphologically, Bertoni’s Antbirds are remarkably similar to Ferruginous Antbird (Drymophila ferruginea), with only minor differences, particularly in their call.
