Native to Brazil, the Bare-throated Bellbird (Procnias nudicollis) is approximately 27 cm in length and is listed as Near Threatened in Brazil. The male Bellbirds call is among one of the loudest known calls in the world, producing a metallic sound of 125 decibels which can be heard up to two kilometers away. The Bellbird lives for around 12 years, and its young mature into adults after two years. The male is entirely white and has a bright turquoise throat, while the female’s body has green shades, which makes them hard find. The Bellbird can be found in subtropical or tropical moist lowland and montane forests and migrates altitudinally into the lowlands during the cooler winter months. The Bellbird is a bioindicator of healthy forests and plays a significant role in the maintenance of the environment it inhabits, dispersing seeds of several native fruits of the Atlantic Rainforest. Its absence may indicate degradation or deforestation. They are extremely sensitive to urbanization and deforestation. They feed on fruits and small insects.
